The project

In recent decades, Italy’s forest area has expanded, yet so have the challenges threatening its health, such as the depopulation of rural areas, leading to forest abandonment, and the fragmentation of property ownership.

In this context, implementing efficient, economically viable, and responsible forest management is difficult due to high costs, a shortage of technical personnel, and limited organizational capacity.

To improve forest management in Italy, the LIFE ClimatePositive project was launched. Coordinated by Etifor | Valuing Nature, it brings together some of the leading Italian experts in the forestry sector.

Objectives

LIFE ClimatePositive involves some of Italy’s top forestry experts, who will:

  • Develop a national protocol for monitoring carbon absorption from forests and forestry activities (GHG – GreenHouse Gases) and regulating initiatives linked to carbon markets. This will enable Italy to align its forestry sector with European carbon farming initiatives.
  • Clarify and make association tools more accessible and SMART, in order to increase sustainably and responsibly managed forest areas, including through FSC® certification, and to facilitate small forest owners’ access to carbon and ecosystem service markets.
  • Promote forest owners’ associations through research and implementation of pilot case studies.

Intervention areas

In these pilot areas, innovative forest management and reforestation activities are being implemented to enhance carbon sequestration and foster biodiversity:
